Motocross: Reed claims an early championship victory with two rounds to go

Chad Reed rode to victory at Budds Creek Motocross Park in Mechanicsville, Md., despite adverse weather conditions. The victory, and points earned, enabled Reed to claim the title of 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Champion with two rounds to go.

The two-time AMA Supercross champ leads second place Andre Short by 104 points in Championship standings. A number great enough for the rider to claim victory with two rounds left in the Championship. Reed rode to victory five times this season, a feat accomplished during the first year he ever won an AMA Motocross event.

The goal of the contest is to generate ideas for a slogan that will be used primarily for women’s shirts, as well as other items the MSF may choose to make available for sale. H-D Promotes Women Riders

Harley-Davidson steps up to educate and support the rising trend of women riding motorcycles

Women that ride and buy motorcycles have been on a steady rise in the last decade. According to the 2008 Motorcycle Industry Council Owner Survey, female ownership of motorcycles crossed the 10-percent mark, increasing from 9.6 percent in 2003 up to 12.3 percent in 2008. One manufacturer, Harley-Davidson, is stepping up more to support and educate this rising demographic.

Leslie Prevish was just what The Motor Company needed to head this initiative. Prevish, a 20-year riding veteran, had been a strong advocate for women riders since she began riding. She became Harley-Davidson’s Women's Outreach Manager and was soon joined by Laura Scherr. Together, these two women create women-specific rides and events, hold classes geared toward new riders, and publish educational and marketing materials targeted at attracting this ever-growing sector of female motorcycle customers.

Big Four Cuts Production

Japan's OEMs cut production 39 percent during first half of 2009

Japan's four major motorcycle manufacturers produced 360,981 units during the first six months of the year, down 39.2 percent compared to 593,384 units during the first six months of 2008, according to output figures compiled by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Honda produced 109,321 units during the first six months of the year, down 29.5 percent compared to 155,266 units produced during the same six-month period in 2008; Kawasaki produced 62,492 units, down 32.9 percent compared to 93,251 units; Suzuki produced 92,111 units, down 50.2 percent compared to 185,276 units; and Yamaha produced 97,035 units, down 39.1 percent compared to 159,554 units.

After saying Heartland Park Topeka didn’t meet safety standards, series leader Mat Mladin opted out of this weekend’s American Superbike race. But that was only the first of his media blitz. The Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider with 14 years of AMA racing under his leathers also announced his retirement after the season’s commencement at New Jersey Motorsports Park. He didn’t give any concrete details about why he’s leaving, or what he plans to do, but had previously announced some frustrations with the Daytona Motorsports Group, who run AMA Pro Racing.

MotoGP: Donington Results

The Doctor was out. Dovizioso, Edwards, and De Puniet were in.

The final MotoGP visit to Donington Park ended with a first ever premier class victory by Andrea Dovizioso and first podium finishes in 2009 for Colin Edwards and Randy de Puniet. The Doctor, Valentino Rossi, experienced a fall at the Fogarty Esses with 11 laps to go. Rossi was unable to add another victory to his laundry list of wins at Donington.

Early on into the race, volatility and indecision plagued the riders. As rain began to fall, the riders were left guessing whether or not they made the right tire choice. Toni Elias led for lap one, but Jorge Lorenzo grasped the lead, possibly as a result of being talked out of running wet tires, but took a fall when he graced a greasy rumble strip and couldn’t restart the Yamaha M1. Elias succumbed to the same fate as Lorenzo, taking a fall in the same spot on lap 7.

AMA Pro Racing suspends Technical Director Al Ludington indefinitely following Mid-Ohio event; Ludington apologizes for actions…Janson to oversee at-event Technical Operations in interim

AMA Pro Racing officials have announced the indefinite suspension of the organization's Technical Director of Competition Al Ludington for conduct detrimental to the sport of professional motorcycle racing following this past weekend's AMA Pro Road Racing event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

The indefinite suspension will preclude Ludington's participation in AMA Pro Road Racing events commencing with next weekend's round at Heartland Park Topeka following his actions and behavior at Mid-Ohio on Saturday, July 18, in an exchange with AMA Pro American Superbike rider Johnny Rock Page, which was caught on film (click here for YouTube video). H-D Shut Down

H-D to Shut Down Production for 14 Weeks

Harley-Davidson plans production shutdowns and line rate adjustments at powertrain operations in Menomonee Falls and Wauwatosa, Wis., and at motorcycle assembly operations in York, Pa., and Kansas City, Mo.

The shutdowns and line rate adjustments are part of the OEM's plan to cut production by 25 to 30 percent and lay off up to 1,000 workers in an effort to reduce output, match demand and shrink inventories.

Sportster and V-Rod motorcycle final assembly operations and V-Rod motorcycle powertrain production in Kansas City, and production of Sportster motorcycle powertrains in Wauwatosa will be shut down for approximately 14 weeks in 2009, including the entire fourth quarter. The company anticipates that other production operations will be shut down for a total of approximately five weeks over the rest of 2009.

Eslick Takes his Fourth Win at Mid-Ohio

Danny Eslick grabbed his fourth career AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL victory on the No. 9 GEICO Powersports/RMR Buell 1125R in Race One of the Honda Super Cycle Weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Eslick started the day strong by claiming the pole in Saturday morning's final qualifying effort. The grid was set by that result as the weekend's basic qualifying and Superpole sessions were canceled due to a Friday afternoon rain shower. By the end of the race's first lap, Eslick had built up a .551 second lead over the No. 88 Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R of Jamie Hacking, who steadily chipped away at the lead over the ensuing laps before taking the point in Turn 6 on Lap 7. Hacking held the lead for two laps until mechanical troubles sidelined him for the race on Lap 9.

"I got a good start, right off the bat and led a couple of laps," said Eslick. "I didn't see anybody coming through, which usually happens as everybody's really aggressive the first few laps. I knew we had kind of pulled away and then Jamie came by. I think I was on the brakes the first time and he came up. He came by me and we battled back and forth for a lap or two and when he had his problem, I almost ran up his exhaust pipe. He did a good job getting his hand up and out of the way, so good job there. It could have been real ugly in that spot."

Graves Yamaha teammates Josh Herrin and Tommy Aquino held an aggressive battle for position throughout the 21-lap sprint race. At the end of the first lap, Aquino's No. 6 Yamaha YZF-R6 led Herrin's No. 8 Yamaha YZF-R6 to the line, but the rookie couldn't hold the position and was passed by Herrin on Lap 2. The Graves duo moved up the ranks as attrition hit riders Hacking and Martin Cardenas, who was running in third position aboard the No. 36 Team M4 Suzuki GSX-R600 before low siding at the exit of Turn 8 on Lap 5. Aquino was able to squeeze by Herrin again on Lap 9 before Herrin used a block pass on Lap 10 to get by both Aquino and Jake Zemke's No. 1X Erion Honda CBR600RR to take second position.

"I think when (Tommy) passed me, he went to put a move on Jake going into (Turn) 5 on the brakes and I just decided I am going to get both these guys and just dove in there and made a move," said Herrin. "It wasn't purposefully a block pass, but it sort of ended up being a block pass. I just rode defensive from there and luckily we held on to second."

Aquino was also able to get past Zemke, challenging Herrin for the remainder of the race and allowing Eslick to slip away to a 2.318 second lead by the end of the race. The third place finish was Aquino's his first AMA Pro podium finish.

"It was really hard," said Aquino. "I was going as hard as I could, my tires were spent and I was just trying as hard as I could to stay where I was at and try to take a position if I could. I am really happy with this podium. It is my first podium with AMA Pro Racing. I really just have to thank my team."

Zemke turned the fastest lap of the race in Lap 6 at 1:28.160 and ran as high as second before finishing fourth. Chaz Davies rounded out the top five on the No. 57 Factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies Team Aprilia RSV1000R. Points leader Cardenas recovered to finish 12th and holds the championship lead over Eslick 264-244.

Mid-Ohio SportBike: Race 2

Eslick Wins Barn Burner in Day Two at Mid-Ohio

Danny Eslick's No. 9 GEICO Powersports RMR Buell 1125R came out victorious in a battle that went down to the wire with the eventual second-place No. 88 Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R of Jamie Hacking in the second of two AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL races at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Six official lead changes came between the riders that claimed the top two spots over the course of the 21-lap sprint race that opened Sunday's races at the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tires.

The excitement began on the sighting lap, with Jake Zemke's No. 1X Erion Honda CBR600RR losing power in Turn 4. Last season's Formula Xtreme champion was forced to run back to the pits and start from the rear of the grid on his backup bike. A clean start followed and Eslick led the field through the first set of turns before being passed by Hacking in Turn 6. Eslick regained the top spot in Turn 1 on the following lap. That set of passes would set the tone for the two riders, occurring in the same fashion on Laps 14 and 15. Hacking recaptured the lead in Turn 6 on Lap 16 and was able to hold off a rushing Eslick for four more laps.

On the final lap, Eslick took a page from the Kawasaki rider's book and looked to the inside in Turn 6, but was unable to complete the pass. This set him up for an inside line through the Esses and the pair leaned on each other as they made their way through. The No. 9 Buell emerged as the leader and led the field to the finish.

"Jamie was real strong out of the keyhole," said Eslick. "He was strong out of it and strong into it, and I was good through the middle. We went back and forth a couple times. (The last lap pass) was the cleanest pass I could definitely make. There was some contact, but it was good. Jamie would have stuck it in there just as hard as I would have."

Josh Herrin's No. 8 Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 also presented a challenge, passing Hacking on Lap 3 and taking the lead from Eslick on Lap 7. Herrin officially led two laps, although he and Eslick traded the lead twice on Lap 8 before Eslick was able to take the lead from the Yamaha for the final time on Lap 9. Herrin finished 12th after an off-course excursion on Lap 13 allowed Hacking to challenge Eslick for the final portion of the race. In all, Hacking led for seven laps and earned his sixth podium and fifth second-place finish of the Daytona SportBike season.

"The race today was great," said Hacking. "We were pushing hard the entire race. I was stronger on this side of the race track and Danny was stronger back there in the back and it just made out for a really good race, close racing. I put everything I had into the last couple laps there and I thought I had the door closed enough. He muscled his way in there and made a clean pass. I had made that pass before and there were no hard feelings. He rode a great race, and we pulled away from everybody else this weekend."

Martin Cardenas recovered from a crash in Saturday's Daytona SportBike race to run clean and consistent, claiming the final spot on the podium aboard the No. 36 Team M4 Suzuki GSX-R600. The Colombian now leads the Daytona SportBike standings by 10 points over Eslick, 285-275. Hacking is close behind in third with 241 points.

"It was a hard race for me because my confidence wasn't very good after two races, two crashes," said Cardenas. "So today that was the best I could do. These guys were a little bit faster than me, and I tried to stay with them, but five laps from the end I made a mistake and almost crashed and so I decided that third place was good enough for today."

Fourth place went to the No. 54 Latus Motors Racing Buell 1125R of Taylor Knapp, who pulled double-duty this weekend racing, where he also earned a top-10 finish on the No. 44 Taylor Knapp Racing Buell 1125RR in the final American Superbike race of the weekend. Roger Hayden encountered electrical problems in Saturday's race, but had a strong showing Sunday to complete the top five on the No. 95 Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R. Zemke climbed 11 positions on the first lap and powered through the field to salvage a 10th place finish.

Next up for AMA Pro Daytona SportBike is a doubleheader at the Tornado Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka on the weekend of July 31-August 2.

World MX1: Round 3

Double Podium for Teka Suzuki in Belgium

The third round of the 2009 United Telecom Belgian Motocross Championship saw both Teka Suzuki World MX1 riders circulating at speed for the first time since April and Ken De Dycker and Steve Ramon were able to take their works RM-Z450s to second and third places overall at the Nismes circuit in some changeable weather conditions.

Across the stony, slippery course in the south of the country, De Dycker and Ramon had to play second fiddle to Clement Desalle, but the sight of both Suzuki riders on the podium was a positive outcome for the team in the midst of a summer break and just two weeks before their home Grand Prix at Lommel, Limburg for what will be the 12th round of 15 in the FIM World Championship.

De Dycker was not able to claim victory for the third time in a row but his scorecard of 2nd, 2nd and 3rd in the three motos was enough to guarantee the second step.

"I'm not too happy really," he commented. "Things went OK in practice but my arms tensed up in the first moto and I struggled to feel good on the track for the rest of the day. It was really hard and stony with not many ruts, so it wasn't an easy run."

Nismes represented the first competitive outing for Ramon since the 2007 World Champion fractured his C7 vertebrae at the Grand Prix of Benelux 10 weeks ago. The 29 year old rode to 3rd, 5th and 2nd positions for an effective and steady comeback.

"It was a pretty good day and I think it was the right decision to race here, even if I have never been a fan of the track and actually found it pretty dangerous in some places," he said. "The first moto was ruined a little bit by arm-pump and I had a bad start in the second but the third was the best and after De Dycker had made a mistake I could keep speed with Desalle. The meeting went like I expected and now I will continue getting ready for Lommel."

Teka Suzuki World MX1 will compete in the next meeting of the ADAC MX Masters German series at Tensfeld this weekend.

German 125cc GP

Marquez’s podium hopes end in gravel in closing stages of German 125cc GP

Red Bull KTM Moto Sport’s talented young Spaniard Marc Marquez was denied a podium place on Sunday at the German 125cc GP on the Sachsenring when he slid off the track in the closing stages of the race.

Marquez was able to remount and finally finished back in sixteenth place, two behind KTM teammate American Cameron Beaubier. A series of slick maneuvers and patience had allowed him to slip from fifth to third place going into the final lap and he seemed to have the minor podium firmly in his grasp. The 16-year-old Spaniard was already sizing up fellow Spaniard Joan Olive with just a lap and a half to go. He moved up from fifth to fourth place before then advancing to third. But then he was involved in a spectacular high side after a too close encounter with fourth placed Nicolas Terol on the final lap. Fortunately he was not seriously injured.

Marc Marquez: "My start was not so good but I did manage to overtake a couple of riders in the first lap. The times were much faster today because it was dry and initially I didn't have such a good feeling for the bike. But that changed, especially when it looked like I was going to make the podium. But then on the straight just before the last corner Olive went zigzag and we touched. The unlucky thing was that he touched my brake lever and when I wanted to brake it no longer worked. The crash looked very spectacular, but luckily I am in very good physical shape so I wasn't hurt."

Marquez has started the day well being the fastest in the morning warm-up after winning a very creditable third place on the front line grid in Saturday's qualifying. The race was in dry weather in contrast to a difficult qualifying session on Saturday when riders battled rain and a slippery surface on the traditional German circuit.

For Marquez's young teammate Beaubier, also just 16 years old, it was his best finish so far this season and he finished with two championship points.

Cameron Beaubier: "My start was okay and I was able to pass some guys but they were taking be back during the first lap. It was a constant battle and when I started to go faster I made a mistake went off the track. Later in the race I tried very hard to close the gap to the guys in front of me and I was lucky to score two points today. During warm up I saw that our bike set up was much better and I was confident for the race."

Team boss Harald Bartol: "The situation with Marquez in the final lap was not completely kosher, but that's racing. Marc again did do a very good race. It was just a pity that the brake lever got bent so badly in the fight with Olive. As regards to Cameron I think he would have been able to pick up even more points with some better concentration. But on the other hand, I have to admit that this circuit doesn't give you many chances to relax.”

E3 World Championship: Mexico

Cervantes takes 2-1 result in E3 in Mexico

Ivan Cervantes of the KTM Enduro Factory Team came away from the two E3 World Championship rounds in Mexico’s Valle de Bravo with an excellent 2-1 result to further boost his title chances with just four races to go.

The team's Spanish rider finished second behind Frenchman Sebastian Guillaume on Saturday, continually picking up his performance on the difficult track as the day progressed. Riders tacked the challenges of hard terrain on top of altitudes of up to 2200 meters in the mountainous lakeside resort just two hours from Mexico City. Cervantes went one better in Sunday's race, recovering from a crash in the second test, where he lost about 30 seconds to take the victory on the day. He now has a 22-point lead in the standings with four races still in hand.

Cervantes KTM team-mate Samuli Aro was just off the podium in fourth place for both races and is currently in fourth place in the standings. Aro however was the winner of the KTM Super Test on Friday night which was held on the shores of the lake at Valle de Bravo. The Super Test drew large crowds to watch the world's best Enduro riders in action and is a new feature of the championship that is proving to be a crowd winner and a value added attraction for the sport.

Fabio Farioli, team boss of the KTM Enduro Factory Team reported that the well run event was much tougher than riders had first expected, with the high altitude affecting both bikes and riders.

British Supersport: Mallory Park

Martin and Gearlink Kawasaki take the victory

Chris Martin followed up team-mate Ben Wilson's win at the previous round by storming to victory in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship race at Mallory Park for Round 7 of the series on Sunday.

The Gearlink Kawasaki duo were formation flying at the front of the pack, with Martin then able to gradually edge an advantage over his team-mate on track in the wet conditions.

Ian Hutchinson was quick off the line and was able to put himself third for the Padgetts Honda team, giving him the best result of the season.

For fourth there was an all-Australian tussle between title contender Billy McConnell on the MAP Raceways Yamaha and Brendan Roberts on the NW200 Coca-Cola Zero Yamaha.

The pair who previously battled together in the Virgin Yamaha Cup were swapping places in a bid for supremacy, with McConnell able to put himself ahead and hold it to the line.

Championship leader Steve Plater was only able to manage a seventh place for the HM Plant Honda team, but still holds an 11 point advantage in the overall standings ahead of Brands Hatch.

The Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minnesota saw Yamaha rider Josh Grant hold the lead for most of the race to win in Moto 1. Grant passed Suzuki’s Chad Reed in the second lap, after which Reed stuck on Grant for the rest of the race, coming up short of the win nearly two seconds behind. Davi Millsaps stuck in third place for the majority of the race until lap 12 where he experienced problems that forced him to drop out.

On lap 15, Honda rider Ivan Tedesco, in fourth place, tried to fight off Michael Byrne and Tommy Hahne but came up unsuccessful. Following suit from Hahne and Byrne, Andrew Short began a passing attempt on his teammate, Tedesco, but couldn’t pull it off and finished one second behind Tedesco in sixth. Reed and Grant swept the field finishing nearly a whole minute ahead of Michael Byrne who finished third.

Moto 2 started with Ivan Tedesco, Honda Red Bull Racing, in the lead. Chad Reed took the lead from Tedesco at the beginning of the race and finished in first. Tedesco finished Moto 2 in second. On lap six, Millsaps overtook Brayton, KTM, for third. Suzuki rider, Byrne, overtook Short to move into fourth followed by Kyle Regal, Brayton, and Cody Copper. Josh Grant was unfortunate to experience a bad start, forcing him to battle the field from next-to-last, with an eventual finish in the top ten.
